Purple Rain Luminaire .pdf
Unfortunately "Foster" prints dark and my oh-so-clever lyrics to "Purple Rain" didn't show up in my printed version of this project. Click on the image to take a closer look...
Glad to see that despite the fact that you are running without software, you managed to get into the spirit of the assignment. I like the way that the photographed form varies from your original template a little. Looks like you adjusted the folds to get more light coming out of the end of the box. You could keep playing with the end folds and openings to get more light to come out of the piece.
I would be interested in seeing the form created in different materials - the darker overlapping of paper could become a design feature if you used something translucent. If you were to create the multiple floret lamp, then the way that the bases attach together would become a design sub-problem. You could choose to have the lamp suspended by a spoke held up by a hallow ring so that light went up onto the ceiling as well as coming out the bottom. I still think it looks nice flipped upside down as a sconce or floor lamp - then the support could be decorative, sleek or minimal.
Just caught the fact that the bedside lamp also has the fixture on it - very funny! Would be interesting to think about how the folding/overlapping mechanism could be used to create temporary shelter, as in a tent.
