This guy reminds me of the mushrooms from Fantasia's Nutcracker Suite. So humble, that they don't dare show their faces. The top surface is so dominant, I want to see much more of the petticoats underneath.
In the 4x layout, I'm glad you labeled the versions. Be careful how you use the graphic callouts: they will be more neutral if the arrows are all horizontal and you lose the circle. On this version, they point towards the center which is empty.
Looks like it was a useful experiment in layered textures. Now I'd love to see how apply what you learned to other forms: your own version of layers.
